Waltrip not racing or talking

Posted by on April 13th, 2007

Michael Waltrip isn’t talking or racing this weekend.

Waltrip will miss his sixth straight NASCAR Nextel Cup race after qualifying at Texas was canceled Friday because of severe storms.

The two-time Daytona 500 winner, in the first year with the Toyota team he owns, doesn’t have enough season points to get in the 43-car field.

The namesake for “Dale’s Dip” was intrigued by efforts to fix the rough spot at Texas Motor Speedway.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. complained about a slight depression between Turns 1 and 2 after the fall race, prompting a $50,000 repair job designed to “pump up” the surface of a 200-foot section of the track. Earnhardt said Friday he’d never heard of the process he read about in a newspaper.

“Sort of like, implants for a track,” he mused to reporters.

Posted by admin on April 13th, 2007

Weather shortened two attempts at practice sessions Friday. The first try ended after about 15 minutes because of rain, and the second was stopped after about 30 minutes because severe weather was on the way.

Weather cancels qualifying; field set by points

Posted by on April 13th, 2007

Nextel Cup qualifying at Texas Motor Speedway has been canceled because of approaching severe weather. The field will be set by points with Jeff Gordon on the pole. Robby Gordon blew an engine in the first practice before rain postponed it and Kurt Busch crashed when it resumed.

NASCAR

Carl Edwards has been waiting a long time to do another Sunday backflip.

While Edwards is dominating the Busch Series this year, with a huge points lead and two straight victories, he hasn’t been able to do his trademark celebration after a Nextel Cup race since November 2005 in Texas.

“It doesn’t really seem like that long ago,” Edwards said.
