Denny Hamlin won the Diamond Hill Plywood 200 for the second straight year Friday night, again surviving a wreck-filled Busch Series event at historic Darlington Raceway.

Hamlin, a Virginia native, then paid tribute to the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre, taking a school flag along for his victory lap.

Hamlin had hoped to honor the victims several times in the past month, and particularly last week at Richmond International Raceway.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. went back to work Friday, climbing into his race car at Darlington Raceway to escape the frenzy surrounding his free-agent status.

As his late father’s boss threw his name into the race to sign NASCAR’s most popular driver, Junior made it clear he needs a little time to figure out his future. He said Thursday he’ll leave Dale Earnhardt Inc. at the end of the season.

Dale Jr. ninth highest-paid athlete

According to a chart on charlotte.com, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who announced yesterday he will no longer drive for Dale Earnhardt Inc. in 2008, is the ninth highest-paid athlete.

It’s incredible to think Earnhardt brings home $20 million in endorsements. Man, that’s a lot of Budweiser.
