Michael Waltrip is finally back on track.

After missing 12 straight races, the two-time Daytona 500 champion qualified 23rd Friday for Sunday’s race at Dover International Speedway.

Embarrassed by an off-track incident where he fell asleep at the wheel and was charged with reckless driving and failing to report an accident, a cheating scandal that cost him his crew chief and the string of DNQs, this has been a miserable season for Waltrip and his No. 55 NAPA Toyota team.

With his crew chief suspended and contract negotiations for next season still ongoing, an undistracted Dale Earnhardt Jr. almost had a pole to celebrate in Friday’s qualifying for the Autism Speaks 400.

Earnhardt was bumped off late by Ryan Newman for the top spot for the race at Dover International Speedway. Newman followed last week’s front-row start with his second straight pole and 40th overall with a lap at 152.925 mph (246.1 kps).
