Dale Jr. more interested in sponsor than number

Posted by on September 1st, 2007

Dale Earnhardt Jr. does have a couple of numbers in mind for his new ride at Hendrick Motorsports next season. But he isn’t telling - yet.

“I do have one or two that are on the top of the list,” he said at California Speedway, where he will race in Sunday’s Sharp Aquos 500 NASCAR Nextel Cup event. “I don’t think there is a reason to make a big deal out of it.

“The bigger deal to me is the people that we partner with and the sponsorship that we put together.

Johnny Benson raced to his second straight NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory, holding off Ron Hornaday Jr. in the Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 on Saturday night.

Points leader Mike Skinner had the pole position and led the first 30 laps on the 1.25-mile Gateway International Raceway oval, but dropped from contention after blowing out his right front tire.

Benson overcame a loose lug nut on his left front tire that forced him to pit twice and dropped him to 21st.

Kurt Busch is doing his own version of scoreboard watching as NASCAR’s “regular season” winds to a close.

“This is big picture time,” Busch said. “I guess I’ve looked at just about every mathematical scenario. The bottom line is that if we are 165 (points) ahead of 13th place after Sunday night, then I think we are guaranteed a spot (in the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship).

Hamlin wins 12th Busch Series pole

Posted by on September 1st, 2007

Denny Hamlin, the last of 42 drivers to make a qualifying attempt, knocked Kasey Kahne off the pole for Saturday night’s Camping World 300 NASCAR Busch Series race at California Speedway.

Hamlin’s fast lap of 180.316 mph on Friday, came with the sun setting on a track that was finally cooling a bit after the high temperature had reached 104 degrees and the track temperature went over 140.

The lap was good enough to give Hamlin his 12th Busch pole and relegate Kahne’s 180.
