Teammates Johnson, Gordon to vie for title

Jeff Gordon and current Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson open the Chase for the championship this Sunday at New Hampshire as the favorites to win the Nextel Cup title. Johnson is seeded first and Gordon second in the Chase standings after they dominated the “regular season” with a combined 10 victories in 26 races.

No reward; Gordon’s lead wiped out

In a pre-2004 world, Jeff Gordon would be heading into Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup race at New Hampshire International Speedway with a 312-point lead over runner-up Tony Stewart.

But, since the Chase for the championship came into existence four years ago, whatever margin the series leader has built is nothing but an afterthought once the first 26 races are in the books.

It was a mixed bag for the 12 NASCAR champion contenders during the first day of the first race in the Chase for the Nextel Cup.

Six Chasers posted top-10 finishes in Sylvania 300 time trials at New Hampshire International Speedway.

For pole-sitter Clint Bowyer, 28, who qualified on top for his first Chase with a lap of 130.412 mph (29.206-seconds), starting the postseason with the prospect of securing his first career Cup win was precisely what he needed.
