Truck champion takes Talladega win

Todd Bodine barely held off Rick Crawford and Johnny Benson in a three-wide finish Saturday in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Bodine, the reigning truck champion, was out front for a restart with two laps to go on the 2.66-mile oval, with Crawford and Benson close behind in a single-file line of competitors.

Jarrett to make announcement next week

Dale Jarrett will apparently scale back his schedule next season, saying Saturday he plans to do “some racing” in 2008.

The 1999 Cup champion has been mulling his future for some time, and said he’ll reveal his plans next week at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

“Can you hang on for five days?” he asked after qualifying at Talladega Superspeedway. “I don’t think it’s anything that will change the world or anything.

Lots of unknowns for ‘Dega race day

The racing is always intense at Talladega Superspeedway, where drivers spend 500 white-knuckled miles trying to avoid the inevitable wreck known as “The Big One.”

The tension should be even higher Sunday. The restrictor-plate debut of the Car of Tomorrow, the Nextel Cup debut of former Formula One champion Jacques Villeneuve and a fierce title hunt should have the field on edge for what figures to be a wild race.

“It’s going to be interesting,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said Saturday.

Richie Gilmore, VP of Competition for Dale Earnhardt Inc.. was airlifted to Trinity Medical Center in Birmingham on Friday afternoon after suffering an aneurysm, according to DEI competition director Steve Hmiel.
