Musgrave wins first race since ‘05

Posted by on November 2nd, 2007

Ted Musgrave broke a 66-race winless streak, taking the checkered flag under caution after the two trucks in front of him crashed going into the first turn of what was supposed to be a green-white finish Friday night.

Chad McCumbee spun the tires on his Chevrolet on the final restart and when he tried to keep Jack Sprague from passing him on the restart, the two made contact and slammed into the wall at Texas Motor Speedway.

Carl Edwards has a good starting spot for the race that can clinch his NASCAR Busch Series title.

Edwards had a fast lap of 190.745 mph Friday night to qualify third for the O’Reilly Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway. Edwards only has to finish Saturday’s race 36th or better to clinch the season title with two races still left after that.

Edwards has 19 top-10 finishes this season and has finished below 36th only once. He was third at Texas in April.

Nextel Cup rookie AJ Allmendinger was fast in practice Friday, and again when it counted during qualifying at Texas.

With a fast lap of 192.239 mph, only a bit higher than his practice speed, Allmendinger qualified fifth for Sunday’s Dickies 500. It is his best career starting position in a Cup race, the first time he has been in the top 10.

Allmendinger failed to qualify in 17 of the first 33 races this season, including the spring race at the 1 1/2-mile Texas track in April.
