Chip Bolin opened preseason testing at Daytona International Speedway leading the No. 17 team, which had been run by Robbie Reiser since its 1999 inception. Reiser stepped down at the end of last season to become general manager of Roush Fenway Racing.

Mears and the No. 5 team are definitely comfortable in the shadows at Hendrick Motorsports, despite being perceived as the weak link of the mighty organization.
