This is part 19 of the 1984 Daytona 500. This race run on February 19, 1984, is one of the truly forgotten jewels in the history of nascar. In fact, I consider this race, the 26th running of the Daytona 500, to be the greatest of all the Daytona 500s. It might not have had the most memorable moments, but from a pure competition standpoint, as far as the greatest drivers and teams in the history of the sport, and the all-day competition between the finest in the sport’s history at their peaks, this ranks to me as the greatest Daytona 500 of all time. This 19th part features the finish of the race, as seven drivers race towards a great finish. However, that number is reduced to six when Terry Labonte suffers an apparent tire problem and hits the wall shortly after being passed by Dale Earnhardt (and others) for third place with about 10 laps left. alfa . The running order remains the same as the six drivers race to the finish, with Darrell Waltrip leading, Cale Yarborough second, Dale Earnhardt third, and Neil Bonnett having moved by both Bill Elliott and Harry Gant for fourth. Then on the last lap, Yarborough, with Dale Earnhardt’s drafting assistance, makes his move exactly where he passed Buddy Baker to take the 1983 race.
